We can help simplify your year-end giving so you can make the most impact without feeling rushed. We help you plan ahead, coordinate with your financial advisors, and handle the details so your generosity is timely, thoughtful and aligned with your goals.

Whether you are exploring new ways to give or want to stay ahead of year-end deadlines, we are here to help you make the most of your generosity right up until December 31.

Ways we can help

Understanding the tax policy landscape

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) brings changes to charitable deductions that create unique opportunities to make your giving more impactful in 2025. Timing your contributions thoughtfully can help you take full advantage of available tax benefits while also supporting the causes that matter most to you.

Contributing to a donor advised fund (DAF) or another charitable fund at The Community Foundation allows you to combine these advantages with flexibility and long-term planning. A DAF lets you make a tax-deductible gift now while distributing grants to nonprofits of your choice over time.

Donating stock

If you plan to donate stock as a charitable gifts, then you are encouraged to make your request of gift transfers from your advisor well in advance of December 31st in order to meet the deadlines of different brokerage firms. Review our stock transfer instructions and reach out to our giving advisors for assistance.

Identifying local nonprofits struggling with fewer resources

When funding falls short, the people who feel it most are our neighbors who rely on essential programs and services. As Greater New Haven’s home for charitable giving, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has a thorough understanding of our region’s needs. We stay closely connected to local nonprofits and track where support is most urgent. Our team can help you identify opportunities where your giving will have meaningful, measurable impact.

Whether your focus is health, education, the arts or basic human needs, we serve as a resource to connect you with opportunities where your generosity can make the greatest difference.

You want to make a qualified charitable distribution

Making a charitable donation with your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) helps the causes you care about and can reduce your taxable income. Individuals who are 70 1/2 years old or older can donate up to $108,000 directly from a taxable IRA through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to a charity like The Community Foundation. This may help you avoid being pushed into a higher tax bracket.

You’re planning to sell property or a business

For some donors, non-cash assets including real estate, commercial property, or interests in a privately held business are among their most valuable holdings. When sold, these assets can not only create significant financial gain, but they can also open the door to meaningful philanthropic impact in ways that sometimes exceed traditional cash gifts.

Donating appreciated property or business interests may help you avoid capital gains taxes, claim a charitable deduction, and turn what could be a complicated transaction into long-term benefits for both your financial plan and the community.

When you involve The Community Foundation early in your planning, we collaborate with you and your financial and legal advisors to create a strategy that aligns your personal financial goals with your philanthropic vision.

You’re updating your estate plan and want to include charitable giving

Estate planning is one of the most powerful ways to create a legacy and ensure that the values and causes you care about continue to make a difference long after your lifetime. Even if you haven’t yet decided which specific organizations or programs to support, working with The Community Foundation can help you design a flexible, thoughtful plan that reflects your philanthropic priorities.

By naming The Community Foundation in your estate plans, whether through a will, trust, IRA, life insurance policy or other assets, you gain the confidence that your charitable wishes will be honored exactly as you intend, forever.
