Strategic Planning for the Organization You Are Becoming

As we continue to power through this unprecedented time of COVID-19, nonprofits are stretched and challenged in ways they have never before encountered. This series offers resources on how nonprofits can access, innovate, consider alternative scenarios and adapt strategic objectives to emerge stronger than ever.

NOTE: Participation in the first session on Mission, Vision, Values is required in order to attend any of the sessions that follow:

  • SESSION 1 - September 10, 2020: Mission, Vision, Values
    Evaluating and understanding the purpose of your organization will be considered through the lens of the societal and culture shifts we have been experiencing. How do the vision, mission and values of your organization reflect what is important today and what you must accomplish for the future?
    Follow-up Session - September 17, 2020: Participants are expected to come to this follow-up session having thought through their own missions, values and vision statement, while exploring their constituents and core services.

  • SESSION 2 - September 24, 2020: Assessment
    How to conduct an internal assessment and examine the impact of COVID-19. How to consider alternative scenarios, current state and national trends. When to think about strategic alliances as a means of strengthening the organization.
    Follow-up Session - October 1, 2020:
    Participants should come to this session prepared with what types of assessments they feel are best for their organization at this time that will point to a future strategic direction and how they will undertake them.

  • SESSION 3 - October 8, 2020: Pivoting and Program Innovation
    A look at lessons learned during the pandemic and whether what may have been an interim solution could be adapted on a more permanent basis. Evaluate the core services and their alignment with mission. How services have changed, adapted or need to adapt going forward, and how to address issues of racial inequities within the service delivery platform.
    Follow-up Session - October 15, 2020:
    Participants will be asked how they will further explore or pursue innovative programming as a strategic objective.

  • SESSION 4 - October 22, 2020: Financial Implications of a Strategic Plan and Implementation
    Re-look at all the components discussed and explore what has emerged as a strategic framework from which to formulate strategic objectives. How to consider financial scenario planning within this context, framed from the perspective of 6 months; 12 months; 18 months and longer.
    Follow-Up Session - October 29, 2020:
    Participants will come to the last follow-up session prepared to discuss a preliminary strategic framework for their organizations and thoughts relative to the financial implications of what they are considering.
