About Our Grantmaking - Strengthening Nonprofits - The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven

About Our Grantmaking

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven grants and distributes approximately $20 million each year, carrying out the intentions of donors and organizations, while responding to community needs and taking advantage of emerging opportunities.

How We Do It

The Foundation fulfills its mission by adhering to donor's wishes to make grants to their favorite charities, by responding to the community’s top priorities and by undertaking initiatives in collaboration with other philanthropic leaders in the community.

Grants are made possible through the generosity of thousands of donors over three generations who have created funds or given to any one of the approximately 900 funds managed by The Foundation. In 2015, The Foundation awarded more than $24 Million in grants including competitive and noncompetitive grants, donor advised grants and grants supporting leadership activities.

  • Unrestricted and preference funds distribute millions each year through the competitive responsive grants process to address the immediate needs of the community; grants through the responsive grant process are made in line with The Community Foundation's Guiding Principles for Nonprofits: Leadership, Evaluation and Sound Management, which states that the best use of the community’s endowment is to invest in nonprofits that display leadership in addressing issues and seizing opportunities in the community, that regularly perform evaluation of their services and that practice sound programmatic and organizational management. Unrestricted and preference funds are also used to support Community Foundation leadership activities.
  • Donor advised, designated and organization funds name specific nonprofits as beneficiaries and are not open to a competitive application process. Distributions of grants to nonprofits profiled on giveGreater.org® are similarly determined by donors and may include additional Foundation funds designed to incentivize giving during community challenges, such as The Great Give®.
  • Scholarship funds make distributions to educational institutions on behalf of the students who are awarded scholarships. Eligibility criteria for each scholarship varies.
