Leadership change of any key position - either staff or board leadership - is inevitable in any nonprofit. It can happen suddenly, or it can be planned, such as when an executive announces their retirement. All too often board and staff members are caught off guard without a clear roadmap to keep things running smoothly during the transition. A succession plan provides guidance that minimizes disruption through this time of turbulence. It also maps out an equitable path for leadership and growth among all staff, preparing them to step into new roles and thus ensuring leadership continuity.
Whether you’re a board member or executive director, this workshop will provide tools, templates and frameworks that get you started on developing your organization’s succession plan. You’ll assess your organization’s readiness for transition, develop an outline of your plan, and plan steps to engage others in fleshing it out back at home. All participants will receive these tools to enhance their understanding:
- Succession Planning Readiness Tool
- Agency Information Inventory
- Nonprofit Succession Planning Guide
