Project: Creating a peer mentoring and support program for teenage mothers.

Veronica Alston created the program “Opportunity for Growth” to help teen moms ages 16-20. The goal is to help the young women build supportive relationships through activities including baking, bike riding, writing activities, art therapy, and other ideas that come from the group. Alston also plans to help participants explore career options, prepare for job interviews and become involved in each other’s lives through mentorship. Her ultimate plans are for a 12-week program that includes daycare.

“The purpose mission is to engage and encourage and empower teen moms and to help improve the quality of life for themselves and their small children,” Alston said. “Sometimes they just want someone to listen to them.”
