What is the Valley Community Foundation?
The Valley Community Foundation is a philanthropic organization that serves as a vehicle, available for generous individuals to use, in order to provide for long term giving to the community.  VCF is a supporting organization of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (TCF) and, as a result, benefits from an affiliation with the strong investment performance enjoyed by TCF.

What communities are served by the Valley Community Foundation?
Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton, CT.

Why was the Valley Community Foundation established?
VCF was established to promote increased philanthropy in the community.  It provides local leadership and decision making for endowments.  It also provides more flexible giving options that can be utilized by other organizations that are involved in endowment building.

What is the mission of the Valley Community Foundation?
It is the mission of The Valley Community Foundation to connect private philanthropy to the long-term public good of the Greater Valley.  Our service area is Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton.

Who benefits from the Valley Community Foundation?
The community benefits from the creation of VCF which provides an avenue for centralized philanthropy in the towns we serve.  Donors benefit by having additional, local, giving options.  Nonprofit service providers benefit by having another funder in the community and a parent for endowment building.  Community members benefit from increased philanthropy.

Will the work of the Valley Community Foundation detract from the fundraising efforts of other nonprofits, e.g. The Valley United Way?
A goal of VCF is to become a resource for and partner with other nonprofits.  VCF will coordinate with and identify areas of possible conflict in cooperation with Valley nonprofits and work to address any issues.  VCF will bring additional development resources and endowment building capability to the community.  Increased philanthropy helps everyone.

Who is handling your development efforts? How much money do you want to raise?
The Board of Directors and Executive Director will handle development efforts.  Support for development efforts, as well as other areas is available from The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (TCF).    VCF hopes to raise a total of five million dollars by the end of the third year, this includes $3,000,000 in new dollars to philanthropy (qualifying funds).  Our fund raising goals are based on qualifying and non-qualify funds.  Qualify funds are new dollars brought in.  Non-qualify funds are dollars that are transferred to VCF from other non-for-profit entities.  Each year during the affiliation between VCF and TCF, TCF will make a grant from the Gates Fund to VCF for administrative and programmatic activities, including to re-granting to eligible grantees.  The monies raised will impact the amount of the annual grant from the Gates Fund.  If the total market value of VCF is $5,000,000 or less, the Gates grant will be equal to two times VCF spending revenue.    If the total market value of VCF more than $5,000,000, the Gates grant will be equal to three times VCF spending revenue.    These incentives are anticipated to positively impact development efforts.

Who runs the Valley Community Foundation? Is there a Board of Directors?
VCF is run by a local Board of Directors.  Alan Tyma serves as both a Board member of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and the Valley Community Foundation as the official liaison between the two organizations.  Under our affiliation with TCF, each board has an appointment to the other board.   In addition to the Board of Directors, a full time president runs day to day operations.

Where is the Valley Community Foundation located?
Our office is located at 2 Enterprise Drive, Suite 303 in Shelton.  This office space was generously donated by Robert Scinto.

What is the relationship between the Valley Community Foundation and The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven?
VCF is a supporting organization of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (The Foundation).  This relationship, which is spelled out in an affiliation agreement, provides VCF with access to the strength of The Foundation.  We share a CFO and use The Foundation's  investment expertise, programming and development knowledge.  This strong relationship provides VCF with an immediate support structure that will allow the Board of Directors to focus on leadership and development.

Now that there is a Valley Community Foundation, will The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven still provide grants to Valley nonprofits?
The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven will still provide grant opportunities to Valley nonprofits.  VCF is another vehicle.  It does not replace The Community Foundation of Greater New Haven in the Valley.
