We know that 40% of our region's children aren't ready for school when they get there. What we don't know is why. To begin identifying those factors that contribute to school readiness, The Foundation developed First Years First.
First Years First aims to address the need for quality, accessible child care, the strengthening of family bonds, consistent preventive medical care and family financial literacy.
The initiative is built on the belief that the region's most persistent challenges can best be overcome if young children reach age five ready to succeed in school. It is unprecedented and multi-faceted, addressing the entire continuum of needs for children from birth to five.
In addition, The Foundation is funding a Child Outcomes Tracking Initiative (COTI) to gather data on five key areas of child development as they relate to school readiness. COTI is built on the understanding that families are central to providing the environment necessary for a child to be fully prepared for school. Results of of this work will help inform existing and future Foundation grantmaking, will form a valuable base of knowledge for those involved in school readiness efforts and will provide the Connecticut Early Childhood Education Cabinet with pertinent information to support the development of new public policies that contributeto the succes of all our children.
