The Community Foundation is a philanthropic institution that was established in 1928 through a bequest. We are the largest charitable organization in our region of twenty-towns and over 600,000 people; our endowment is currently valued at approximately $300 million. We are among the oldest and largest of more than 700 community foundations in the United States. In 2007, The Foundation distributed over $12 million in grants.

We help create positive sustainable change by raising money for the community's needs, making grants to local nonprofits, and managing organization endowments.
For nearly 80 years, thousands of donors have helped to increase the community’s endowment to its current value of over $300 million. These donors make gifts to The Foundation to ensure that programs and causes that matter most to them will be sustained in the future. By opening a fund or making a gift, you can have a lasting impact in your community. Whatever inspires you, we can help you make a difference.
Grantmaking is another core function of The Community Foundation. More than $12 million in grants were awarded in 2007 to local nonprofit agencies as a result of the generosity of donors and the Foundation’s sound investment performance. Competitive grants are awarded on the basis of how well non-profit organizations can demonstrate leadership, sustainability and evaluation in addressing an issue.
The Community Foundation has been managing organization endowments since 1978 when the Connecticut Hospice Fund was created. Since then, more than 50 such funds have been established by agencies wishing to take advantage of the investment performance of The Foundation to grow their assets. The Foundation's investment performance consistently ranks among the top tier of community foundations which results in more money for local non-profits serving this community.
