Community Foundation Welcomes New Board Member

New
Haven, CT – (February 8, 2010) The Community Foundation for Greater New
Haven, the region’s community trust and largest grant maker to the
nonprofit community, is please to announce a new appointee to its Board
of Directors, Charles H. Long. Mr. Long has been appointed by the
President of
Yale University for a
term of seven years in accordance to The Community Foundation’s
Resolution and Declaration of Trust; he replaces Bruce Alexander, Vice
President for New Haven and State Affairs and Campus Development for
Yale University.

“Chip has been a member of our community for over four decades and has
made extraordinary contributions as a senior administrator at Yale. I
am confident that Chip Long will continue the proud tradition of great
Yale appointees to our Board."
Mr. Long has been Deputy Provost
of Yale University since 1987, serving under 7 provosts and 4
presidents. He is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of
Rutgers University,
and he earned a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of
California at Berkeley , where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. He
came to Yale in 1966, and after a number of years on the faculty of the
English Department, moved to the Yale College Dean's Office where he
eventually became Dean of Academic Affairs. He later was
appointed to the Provost’s Office, where he has been since 1983,
becoming Deputy Provost of the University in 1987. As Deputy Provost of
the University he is the coordinator and in many cases author of the
University’s core academic policies.
In addition to Mr. Long’s
appointment, Bishop Theodore Brooks has replaced Alan Tyma as Board
Chair; Attorney David Schaefer has replaced Annie Garcia Kaplan as Vice
Chair.
The Community Foundation’s Board consists of eleven
members: Theodore Brooks Sr. of New Haven, David R. Schaefer of New
Haven, James E. Cohen of New Haven, Annie Garcia Kaplan of North
Branford, Howard K. Hill of Hamden, Charles H. Long of New Haven, David
I. Newton of New Haven, James E. Perillo of New Haven, Shelly Saczynski
of North Branford, Alan J. Tyma of Woodbridge, and Rolan Joni Young of
Orange. Board members are appointed either by The Community
Foundation’s Board of Directors or by external appointing authorities
as specified in The Community Foundation’s Resolution and Declaration
of Trust.
Since
1928, donors to The Community Foundation for
Greater New Haven have built the community's endowment currently valued
at more than $280 million. In 2009, The Community Foundation’s Board of
Directors distributed nearly $16 million in grants from over 700
different named charitable funds support ing a wide range of programs
