9.14: Telling the Truth about Domestic Violence

In keeping with its mission to promote social and economic advancement for women, the Community Fund for Women & Girls has a long history of funding programs aimed at eliminating domestic violence and its effects. Over 15 years, thousands of dollars in grants have provided counseling services, safe places for children to play, furniture for shelter residents and training on how to break the cycle of violence.

This year, the Fund is proud to sponsor a discussion with author Allan Johnson about his novel The First Thing and the Last (2010, Plain View Press). Johnson’s book tells an inspiring story of healing and redemption in the aftermath of domestic violence. Part of what makes his novel compelling is what it took to overcome the publishing industry's resistance to bringing it into print.
