You want to make a difference. You want to have an impact... but there are so many worthy causes that deserve your support.

How do you decide?

This site was developed by The Community Foundation to inspire learning and sharing about the many areas of interest in the Greater New Haven region. We invite your questions and your input, all of which will enrich this community resource.

The information on this site is organized in eight categories which include data, resources, research, and articles as well as stories about the work local nonprofits are doing to make a stronger community.

We hope through this knowledge, your confidence about your giving will increase. As a helpful starting point to you, here is information about what The Community Foundation looks for in organizations applying for grants.

We look for organizations that:

• provide a unique or important opportunity in our community
• exhibit leadership at all levels
• embrace self learning through evaluation and knowledge building
• are committed to instituting the highest level of effective practices to achieve their goals

Four core capacities critical to any nonprofit committed to excellence include:

• leadership that creates and sustains the vision and mission and inspires others to join them
• monitoring, assessing and responding to internal and external changes
• ensuring the effective and efficient use of organizational resources
• skillfully and efficiently implementing all of the key organizational and programmatic functions
  

Our Statement of Principle for Grantmaking contains examples of these capacities that you may find useful when making a decision to support a local nonprofit.
