Hillhouse Alums Pay it Forward to Help Aspiring Scholars

(Above: Dr. Pergament with student. Photographer: Peter Casolino/New Haven Register)

Scholarship Funds Award $700,000

When Marc Shafer ’38, created the Hillhouse High School Scholarship Fund in 1993 to celebrate his 55th reunion, he may have imagined that almost twenty years later, fellow alum, Eugene Pergament, ’51(above), would use the Fund to grant $1M in scholarships to Hillhouse graduates over ten years. Such is the strong feeling among many former Hillhouse students for their alma mater. And they are not alone in expressing affection for their high school. The Frederick Giovannini Scholarship Fund established by West Haven High School from a bequest of Mr. Giovannini granted awards for the first time to 2013 graduates attending Southern CT State University.

Scholarships

While a small selection of scholarships are administered and awarded directly by The Community Foundation through its Board of Directors’ Scholarships Subcommittee, the majority of scholarships from Community Foundation funds are administered by schools or other organizations. Awards from such designated scholarship funds are determined externally by school committees, organizations and other parties; students should directly inquire about these and other potential sources of scholarship assistance through their high school Guidance Counselors or college financial aid offices. Unless otherwise noted, if you have questions about applying for a scholarship from any of the funds listed below, please contact Jermell Knotts at 203-777-7084 or jknotts@cfgnh.org.
