In 1986, Philip Henry "Dick" English carried on the family tradition created by his father Henry Fowler English and established a bequest of $250,000. With his Fund, Philip carried on another family tradition, dating back to his grandfather, of support for the New Haven Park Commission.
Philip was born in New Haven January 31, 1893 and attended Hopkins Grammar School and Phillips Andover before following in his father's footsteps at Yale. He served his community in many capacities as a member of the Proprieters Committee for the New Haven Green, the Board of Library Commissioners, the Board of Airport Commissioners, the Board of Education and for nearly 25 years, a member of New Haven's Board of Park Commissioners. In addition to a deep commitment to improve and preserve the city's parks system, Philip was involved with the Boy Scouts for nearly 60 years, donating a scout shelter and dining facility at Camp Sequassen in Winsted, CT.
Both his wife Katharine Dana English and son Richard were equally commited to their local community.
New Haven's Mayor Bartholomew Guida declared May 10, 1974 as Philip H. English Day proclaiming: "Philip H. English has given himself unstintingly in his unceasing efforts to carry forward the good works of a family whose labors on behalf of their city are legend in New Haven and has thus earned for himself the gratitude of his community."
