Show your support for the MOMS partnership
Did you know that women of child-bearing age are at the highest risk for mental illness and that depression is the #1 complication of childbirth?
On Jan. 20, 2012 at 10:00am, Yale University School of Medicine, along with Congresswoman DeLauro, will announce a $2.5M grant to Yale's Mental Health Outreach for Mother's (MOMS) partnership. (Read about the event as reported by the
New Haven Independent and
New Haven Register)
The partnership is entering the second year of implementation of a 5-year strategic plan to ensure the emotional health of New Haven’s families.
The Community Foundation through its
New Haven Healthy Start program is a member of the partnership and has been a collaborator in the plan’s development. Some of the funding will be given to New Haven Healthy Start to lead the social media marketing campaign.
This new federal funding will go a long way in achieving both the Partnership’s strategic goals (as outlined below) as well as supporting the primary goal of New Haven Healthy Start to reduce New Haven’s infant mortality rate.
The objectives of the MOMS Partnership are to:
- Build a comprehensive network of partners to promote mental health for pregnant and postpartum women
- Increase mother’s awareness of available mental health services
- Develop a system for ongoing support and consultation on maternal mental health
- Improve mother’s economic status
- Improve supports for mothers experiencing violence in their neighborhoods
- Expand mental health services for mothers to community settings
- Secure funding for researching and evaluating mental health services and programs
- Educate the public and advocate for policy change as needed
