Foundation Grantee Creates Safe Place for Kids

Youth Continuum (YC), an organization that has promoted the well-being of at-risk youth between the ages of 13 and 23 in the Greater New Haven area since 1966, held a press conference on November 17 to announce the launch of “Safe Place” in New Haven.

Safe Places are locations in New Haven that have been labeled with a decal to let young people in crisis know that this is a place of sanctuary for them with trained outreach staff. This program is part of a national campaign to create safe zones for homeless and at-risk youth across the country, as well as a component project of Youth Continuum’s MacMullen Educational Center, which provides job training, mental health services, and emergency support for youth in the community.

To help our community's young people in crisis, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven recently awarded a multi-year grant of over $100,000 to benefit Youth Continuum's MacMullen Center. In fact, over half a million dollars has been awarded to YC over the past seven years from multiple funds at The Community Foundation, including the Estelle A. Johnson Fund, which was established with a preference that grants from the fund be distributed to programs that provide "...care of neglected children...," among other things.

The Community Foundation is proud to support the incredibly important work of Youth Continuum with at-risk youth in the region. You can support their work as well by:
  • making an online gift directly to the organization at giveGreater.org
  • establishing a designated safe place site or becoming a safe place outreach coordinator - call 203-562-3396 or click here to download a brochure
  • creating a permanent fund at The Community Foundation to benefit Youth Continuum
