Deepen the Impact of their Philanthropy
The Community Foundation works with various groups to grow and deepen the impact of their philanthropy.
The Community Fund for Women & Girls celebrated its 15th anniversary and produced a new documentary, I’m A Philanthropist: How Women Are Changing America’s Charitable Landscape. The film is being shared with local groups to promote the contributions women are making through philanthropy.
The Progreso Latino Fund raised $40,000 through a special fundraising Gala that honored John Soto, a local Latino leader and Fund Advisory Committee member. Proceeds from the Progreso Latino Fund Gala are being used to increase the size of the endowment and its grantmaking activity to nonprofits serving the Greater New Haven Latino community. A portion will also be used to award a scholarship in honor of Mr. Soto, a well-known advocate of higher education. A few months later, the Progreso Latino Fund Steering Committee sponsored a forum with 2010 gubernatorial candidates Dannel Malloy and Tom Foley. Topics included how to address the state budget
deficit, job creation, education and health care, immigration,
affordable housing and the death penalty.
The Urban Prosperity Fund was launched in 2010 to focus on growing African-American philanthropy. It seeks to promote philanthropy, prosperity and self-empowerment in the African American community by supporting excellence in education, financial responsibility, healthy living and spirituality.
Under the leadership of local community members, the Fund was set up to take a multi-faceted approach to creating a brighter future for African American families in New Haven by empowering them through a myriad of activities and services. Chief among those activities is an effort to inform the community about critical issues and opportunities through educational forums, events and networking opportunities, such as a Community Picnic held in July 2010.
In addition, leaders of the Urban Prosperity Fund are working to inspire families to strive for excellence and balance, to care for their community and self and to give back to New Haven’s African American community through a grants program that supports services addressing the Fund’s four priorities.
