87 New Funds

Between 2009-2010, individual philanthropists and nonprofits who wanted more impact, better tax advantages, strong investment performance and a partnership with a knowledgeable resource about the local community turned to The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.

Indeed, The Community Foundation was created as a way to provide the public with a flexible vehicle for making permanent gifts or investments in their community's future*. Over the two year period, The Community Foundation received $43 million in gifts and transfers, including gifts made to its affiliate the Valley Community Foundation which carries out the work of The Community Foundation in the Lower Naugatuck Valley. These gifts and transfers established 87 new funds, representing all fund types: donor advised, unrestricted, preference, organization endowment designated and scholarship.

*Per IRS regulation, all community foundations must meet certain criteria to be considered publicly supported organizations. Once again, The Community Foundation met and exceeded the IRS regulation known as the "33 1/3 percent of support test" for all community foundations requiring that 1/3 of its annual income be in the form of new gifts; The Community Foundation has historically met this criteria thanks to the generosity of three generations of donors who care passionately about the community.
