Foundation Grants

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven makes grants that respond to community needs through support to nonprofits that provide critical services and present opportunities that improve the quality of life and carry out the intentions of donors in The Community Foundation’s twenty town region. Grants from donor advised funds are made with the participation of donors. Grants made from designated funds support specific organizations as expressed by individual donors or organizations, as do organization endowments. Scholarship funds distribute grants to educational institutions on behalf of students for secondary and post-secondary education and training. Grants are also made through competitive processes by The Community Foundation Board using named funds which express a broad preference or give full discretion (unrestricted use) to the Board of Directors; grants through these processes are awarded keeping in mind The Community Foundation's Statement of Principle for Grantmaking (PDF, 170KB), which states that the best use of the community’s endowment is to invest in nonprofits that display leadership in addressing issues and seizing opportunities in the community, that regularly perform evaluation of their services and that practice sound programmatic and organizational management.
