The Progreso Latino Fund

Hispanics make up the largest minority population in the State of Connecticut today. Despite their numbers, they face many challenges like gaining access to health and education services and overcoming racism and discrimination.  Deeply rooted in a culture that values comunidad y familia, Latinos have a long cherished tradition of giving through family, neighbors and churches.

The Progreso Latino Fund signals the readiness of the Latino community to play a greater role within philanthropic institutions such as The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. The Fund was established in 2003 to promote the educational and socio-economic well-being of Latinos in the City of New Haven and the region, with special attention given to Puerto Rican youth.

Periodically the Fund sponsors learning opportunities to engage Latinos in a meaningful way around issues that impact their community and to increase the Fund's endowment. Contact Angela Powers at apowers@cfgnh.org or 203-777-7068 for more information about the Fund and its activities.

Why We Choose to Give

John Padilla presented the idea of Progreso Latino and I spoke to my husband Dale about it.We both thought it was a prudent and appropriate way to make a positive contribution to the Latino community, by highlighting issues which impact that community. I’ve always thought of foundations as a place where people can dialogue about the ideas and issues confronting communities. Progreso Latino provides us with another vehicle through which we can address the issues facing our communities. Through the use of issue oriented forums, Progreso Latino has brought together diverse groups of people to seek answers to complex and challenging issues and concerns. The forums showcase the established, as well as the emerging, leadership and expertise within the Latino community.
